The work and the risks determine the access.
Scaffolding may be needed to provide working access and edge protection. The appropriate arrangement depends on the roof, the task and the contractor’s assessment. A short job still needs proper precautions; the number of tiles alone does not settle the question.
Ask the roofer to establish the access requirements.
HSE guidance says roof work must be planned and carried out with appropriate precautions. It describes scaffold access and edge protection, as well as limited circumstances for other equipment. Ask a competent roofing contractor to assess the task and explain the proposed access method.
A homeowner’s description or photograph helps start a quotation, but cannot establish that working from a ladder is appropriate. This guide is for planning an enquiry, rather than instructions for carrying out roof work.
Describe the repair and where it is.
Tell us whether the work involves roof coverings, the ridge, flashing, a chimney, guttering or a wider replacement. Identify the front, rear or side elevation and the approximate height.
Your roofer should explain the working area, access and any material-handling requirements. A repair at one part of the roof does not automatically need the same scaffold as work along the whole roofline.
- Which roof edge or section needs attention?
- Will contractors work in one position or along an elevation?
- Does the brief include a chimney or another raised feature?
- Will old materials need a planned route to ground level?
Look at what is below the roofline.
At our published Harrogate rear-roofing project, a conservatory and established garden occupied the area beneath the work. The scaffold followed the roofline while taking those features into account.
For your enquiry, mention conservatories, lower extensions, garages, doors, garden features and narrow side access. These details can change how the working area is reached.
Could a ladder or another access method be used?
HSE allows roof ladders for low-risk, short-duration work where more suitable equipment cannot be used. That is a site-specific assessment, not a rule that every small repair can be done from a ladder.
Ask the roofing contractor to explain their assessment. An access tower or mobile platform also has to suit the task and site; Sky High’s scaffold enquiry service does not imply we supply every alternative type of access equipment.
Agree who is arranging the scaffold.
Ask whether your roofing quotation includes scaffolding and who will book it. If you arrange access directly with Sky High, we quote and invoice you directly and coordinate erection and dismantling through independent scaffolding subcontractors.
Share the roofer’s proposed start and expected duration. Confirm the hire period and removal arrangements; if the work overruns, contact Sky High to discuss the change.
